Restoring a Family Heirloom: A Birthday Gift with Meaning
At No Boundaries Furniture, we’re often reminded that furniture isn’t just functional — it’s personal. Recently, we had the privilege of restoring a small side table with a big story behind it.
This table was originally made in 1905 by Brian’s mum’s great-aunt. It had been passed down through the family for over a century and had seen a lot of use — especially as a stand for pot plants. Over time, water damage and age had caused the wood to warp and buckle. The surface was worn, and much of the original detail was hidden under years of wear and tear.
Brian and his family wanted to do something special for his mum’s 90th birthday. Instead of buying something new, they decided to restore something old — something full of history and memory. They brought the table to us with the hope that we could bring it back to life.
We carefully repaired the damage, removed the warping, and worked to preserve the original carved detail. The result is a refreshed version of the same piece — still true to its character, but now strong, stable, and ready to be enjoyed again.
It was an honour to be part of this thoughtful family project. The table has gone from worn and forgotten to a beautiful, meaningful gift — one that carries more than 100 years of family history and is now ready for many more.
